Vocabulary Toolkit

Vocabulary includes understanding and using a range of words such as nouns like 'sand' and 'butterfly', verbs including 'running' or 'washing', adjectives like 'happy' and 'big' and social words such as 'more' and 'bye'. A child must be able to understand what a word means before they can use it correctly.

Having a good vocabulary supports children’s understanding and expressive language. Research has shown that vocabulary is also a powerful predictor of reading and academic success.

What Difficulties May Look Like:

  • Confusing words related in meaning, such as 'knife and fork' with 'scissors and knife'
  • Displaying difficulty learning new vocabulary
  • Struggling to find words they know
  • Using the wrong words or made-up words
  • Over-use of general words such as “thingy” or “that”
  • One word representing a range of words - for example, 'dog' for all animals or 'big' for all size words.

Impact Of Difficulties:

  • Misunderstanding or not following instructions or information
  • Difficulty getting their message across
  • Frustration.

Universal Strategies

The following strategies can be useful to help children with vocabulary difficulties.

Targeted Interventions

Aims of targeted interventions might include:

  • For the child to develop a range of words including nouns, verbs, prepositions such as ‘in/on/under’ and adjectives like 'little'.
  • For the child to be able to sort words into categories. For example subjects like animals, clothes, and transport. Also, identify similarities or differences between items, such as bus vs tractor.
  • For the child to be able to sort items by an attribute, like 'spiky/soft/stripy/long/shiny', or by their function such as things we eat/drive, or things that fly/swim.
  • For the child to be able to give a description or tell you something else about it if they can’t think of the exact word. For example: "It has spots and flies" and "We saw it in the garden".
